The "Candidate" status is the initial stage of an alternative certification program, signifying that you have been accepted into the program and are ready to begin your journey toward certification. Upon receiving your acceptance letter, you must complete necessary administrative steps, such as paying your acceptance fee and acknowledging the Program Agreement. Following this, you’ll be introduced to the “Welcome to Teacher Certification” course, which helps familiarize you with the program’s requirements, the certification process, and the online systems you’ll use throughout your path.
Candidates & Interns / Clinical Teaching Experience (CTE)
Welcome to Candidacy!
Congratulations on being accepted into the Region 10 Teacher Certification Program! As a candidate, you are now on the path to becoming a certified educator in Texas.
Program Status Designations
We want to provide you with a clear understanding of the program status designations as you progress through the Region 10 Teacher Certification Program. These designations include Candidate, Intern, and Clinical Teaching Experience (CTE).
The journey to teacher certification begins with the Candidate status phase, where you are officially accepted into the program and start building a strong foundation by completing coursework and familiarizing yourself with program requirements.
From there, you will choose one of two routes to earn standard certification: the Intern Route, where you serve as a paid teacher of record for one academic year (15 consecutive months), or the Clinical Teaching Route, a supervised, non-paid classroom experience lasting one semester (490 hours).
The candidacy and both routes to standard certification are designed to equip aspiring teachers with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to succeed in the classroom and earn their certification. Our program is committed to supporting you every step of the way!

Intern
The "Intern" status begins when you secure a teaching position, marking the transition into real-world classroom experience while working towards certification. During this phase, you’ll balance the responsibilities of being both a classroom teacher and an intern in the certification program. This phase is rigorous, requiring strong time management to fulfill both the requirements of the alternative certification program and the expectations of your school. It’s a pivotal stage where you apply theoretical knowledge in a practical, teaching environment.
Clinical Teaching Experience (CTE)
The Clinical Teaching Experience (CTE) is equivalent to a traditional student teaching experience at a university and is the final hands-on phase before certification. To participate in the CTE, candidates must complete all required coursework, field-based experience hours, and pass required exams. Additionally, candidates must submit an application and go through an interview with program personnel to ensure readiness. The CTE is an essential part of the certification process, where candidates work closely with experienced educators to refine their teaching skills in a real classroom setting.
