Candidate Information

Upon receiving your acceptance letter, you are ready to officially begin the Candidate phase of the Certification Program. Your next steps include submitting your acceptance fee online and acknowledging the Program Agreement. Once these steps are completed, you will receive instructions via email to access the Welcome to Teacher Certification course. This initial course is designed to introduce you to the program requirements and familiarize you with the online processes essential for your journey through the Certification Program.
General Information
After completing the Welcome to Teacher Certification course, you will continue progressing through the program’s coursework as well as the Field-Based Experience hours. Details about the Field-Based Experience can be found in the Welcome Course.
A Curriculum Requirements document has been emailed to you for reference. This document outlines all phases of your program, including coursework, field-based experience, exam preparation, internship/practicum, and certification milestones. Be sure to save the Curriculum Requirements document for easy access, as it will serve as an invaluable guide throughout the three phases of coursework, testing, and program benchmarks.
This structured approach ensures that you are fully prepared to meet program requirements while developing the knowledge and skills needed for success in the classroom. Stay on track by adhering to the outlined phases as you work toward completing your certification.
Field-Based Experience
All teacher candidates are required to complete 50 hours of Field-Based Experience (FBE) before beginning their teaching practicum. It is recommended that these hours be completed as part of the Welcome to Teacher Certification online orientation course. Within the course, you will find detailed information about FBE requirements, timelines, and the available options to meet this state-mandated requirement.
Curriculum
The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to align with State Standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), state assessments, and best practices in education. To meet program requirements, all teacher candidates must complete 150 clock hours of coursework, 50 hours of Field-Based Experience (FBE), and successfully pass the TExES Content Exam before receiving a Statement of Eligibility (SOE)—a necessary step to secure a teaching practicum. Candidates are expected to fulfill all program requirements within a three-year timeframe.
If coursework is not current (past 18 months old), an Individual Certification Plan (ICP) will be provided. There may be additional fees to update and/or add coursework.
Exam Preparation
The program provides materials and practice tests to support your preparation for the TExES Content Exam, the TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) EC-12 Exam, and the English as a Second Language (ESL) Supplemental Exam, if applicable.

Path from Candidacy to Practicum
Candidates have two distinct routes to complete the Texas Education Agency (TEA) requirements for certification: a paid year-long internship or a non-paid clinical teaching experience. Each route has specific criteria that candidates must meet to participate, ensuring you gain the necessary knowledge and practical experience to excel in the classroom. Our team is here to guide you in choosing the best pathway to achieve your certification goals.
Two Routes to Certification:
Candidates complete a teaching practicum in a school district, charter, or accredited private school through one of these two routes:
Internship
The internship route is open to all program candidates. Interns complete one school year (two consecutive semesters) in a full time paid teaching position.
The internship assignment requires an average of four hours per day in the subject area and grade level of the certification sought. This time commitment includes intermissions and recesses, but excludes conference and duty-free lunch periods.
Clinical Teaching Experience (CTE)
The Clinical Teaching Experience (CTE) route involves an additional screening process. Selected candidates will serve 490 hours in a non-paid position under the mentorship of a cooperating teacher.
All coursework and testing must be completed prior to a CTE placement.
Applications for the CTE route are accepted in March and October.

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, candidates will be recommended for the Texas Standard Certificate. The Educator Preparation Programs Advisory Board will review and approve these recommendations for certification.
