This program provides assistance to charter schools in providing a free and appropriate education for students with special needs. Technical assistance can be provided through consultation by phone, email, fax or written correspondence.
Several states permitted charter schools in 1991 while the state of Texas passed legislation to establish charters in 1995. Charter schools offer an additional choice of public education. Their purpose is to improve student learning and encourage different and innovative learning methods. Like traditional schools, charter schools are monitored and accredited under the statewide testing and accountability system.
