In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004, schools are responsible for providing students who are receiving special education services the opportunity to participate in school through the least restrictive environment (LRE). Special education is a service, not a place. However, understanding a student’s placement in the Least Restrictive Environment is critical to successful progress through the curriculum or Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
Building a shared responsibility for student learning requires all educators, general and special, to collaborate while implementing various instructional strategies to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. Toward this end, Region 10 will offer the following services to districts and charter schools in our region:
- Provide ongoing staff development designed to ensure successful outcomes for all students in general education settings, including students with disabilities
- Provide technical assistance to general and special education teachers and administrators regarding curricular and instructional strategies for students with disabilities
- Research, collect & disseminate information on least restrictive environment, inclusion, and co-teaching
- Develop capacity in schools to serve students with disabilities in inclusive settings.
